Landau 27 August 2024 - a perfect anniversary. The best (zoo) weather, lots of political celebrities including Prime Minister Alexander Schweitzer and Lord Mayor Dr. Dominik Geißler and a record-breaking attendance of visitors. They all celebrated the 120th anniversary of the Landau Zoo. The celebration began with a reception, which was musically shaped by the United Concert Band under the direction of Thomas Winter. Zoo director Dr. Jens-Ove Heckel welcomed and thanked everybody, actually everbody of the zoo's long-standing companions, supporters and partners. That was challenging, but clearly demonstrated the zoo's incredibly large and wide network. Prime minister Alexander Schweitzer outlined the development from a bird park to a scientifically managed zoo with intensive environmental education and a strong commitment to conservation of species. The zoo catering team ‘Erdmänn'l’ treated the guests with small and tasty refreshments. The Group of Friends of the Zoo provided drinks and ran an information stand including a wheel of fortune and a button activity.
The focus of the festival was on wildlife conservation. The highlight was the zoo school's open house. The educators provided information on sustainability and presented animals in the truest sense of the word ‚up close‘, including the gecko, the zoo animal of the year 2024. The Zoological Society for Species and Population Conservation e.V. (ZGAP) provided information about its commitment to highly endangered species and to those species that have still escaped public attention. Customs inspections play an important role in international wildlife conservation. The Saarbrücken Main Customs Office presented its work and career opportunities at a large information stand in the entrance area. The State Association of German Falconers was also represented. The falconers take care of the protection of birds of prey and their habitats. Of course, Sphenisco was also present. At the penguin compound Nicole Bertram, Erich Greiner, Rosemarie Klug and Werner Knauf provided information about the threats the visitors' favorites face and the association's work to preserve their habitats in Chile and Peru. The conservation quiz “How can you help the endangered Humboldt penguins?” was well received and produced only winners, who were delighted to receive a tasteful penguin pin. The quiz triggered conversations. The generosity provoked donations. Many thanks for this and for a wonderful day. All the best for the next 120 years, dear Landau Zoo!
