Projects in Chile

First images of the "Research for Survival" project

Landau November 28, 2021.

The research work in Chile has started (1). The group around Dr. Guillermo Luna (Universidad de Coquimbo), which is conducting the monitoring, has marked 80 nests on the Choros Islands and 40 nests in Chañaral and is documenting breeding activity in the nests.

Dr. Alejandro's group (Universidad Andrés Bello, Santiago) has counted breeding pairs on some islands, including Pan de Azúcar, Tilgo. The work was hampered at times by heavy swell. This caused unexpected waiting times, and the researchers were unable to cross to some islands at all. The group will begin the second round of counting next week.

After completing the counts, both groups will jointly investigate foraging with GPS loggers. This research will be conducted on the main breeding islands of Choros and Chañaral.
